This sonata was Schumann's idea and was intended as a gift and tribute to the violinist Joseph Joachim, with whom the three composers Schumann, Brahms and Dietrich had recently become friends. Joachim had chosen as his motto the phrase in the Romantic spirit Frei aber einsam (free but alone), and the idea was to use the three notes F-A-E as often as possible and in all movements.
