Ensemble Contraste
CHAMBER MUSICEnsemble Contraste
What happens when classical music meets popular music?
The result is a delightful contrast, as reflected in the name of this ensemble created in 2000, composed of virtuoso artists from the worlds of classical music and jazz, all graduates of prestigious European institutions.
The ensemble's true nature lies in demystifying classical music, mixing genres and surprising audiences with original concerts. The diversity of the musicians and the search for original musical arrangements allow for a demanding programme that is accessible to all, ranging from baroque and classical music to tango, musical theatre, jazz and contemporary creations.
From Classic Tango, which was performed all over the world, to the musical shows The Fairy Queen (2015), Joséphine Baker (2016), Georgia - Tous mes rêves chantent (2017), Schubert in Love (2020), Les Choses de la Vie (2021) to his latest creations Rêves with singer Emily Loizeau and Smile alongside jazz musician Hugh Coltman, the productions and discography of this collective of versatile, committed and talented musicians have been unanimously praised by critics (Diapason d'Or, Choc Classica, RTL d'Or, Diamant Opéra, Coup de coeur FNAC, Mezzo selection, Radio Classique, France Inter, etc.).
Under the artistic direction of Arnaud Thorette and the musical direction of Johan Farjot, the Ensemble Contraste performs at the biggest festivals and venues in France and Europe, and is based in the Hauts-de-France region. Contraste regularly collaborates with personalities from different backgrounds: mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes, countertenor Philippe Jaroussky, composer Karol Beffa, sopranos Magali Léger, Sandrine Piau, Rosemary Standley, Albin de la Simone, Emily Loizeau, and others.
Convinced that artists should play an active role in fostering social cohesion, Ensemble Contraste runs an extensive outreach programme for music lovers of all ages in rural areas of the Hauts-de-France region. In partnership with secondary schools, special education centres and associations, it offers multidisciplinary artistic workshops leading to the creation of participatory performances.
Ensemble Contraste is a member of FEVIS (Federation of Specialised Vocal and Instrumental Ensembles), SCPP (Civil Society of Phonographic Producers) and SACEM (Society of Authors, Composers and Music Publishers).
