ANCIENT AND TRADITIONAL ANDEAN MUSICBor Zuljan Spanish renaissance lute and renaissance guitar
Bor Zuljan is active in various musical genres and plays a wide range of ancient, modern, and traditional plucked string instruments. Dubbed the “Lute Revolutionary” (Le Soir), he rediscovers forgotten instruments, sounds, and playing techniques, constantly expanding the range of possibilities.
He performs internationally as a soloist and with various ensembles: Doulce Mémoire, Phaedrus Tasto Solo, Graindelavoix, L'Achéron, Vox Luminis, Il Giardino Armonico, Vortex, with Marco Ambrosini, Golfam Khayam, and Haleh Seifizadeh, with the Teofilović brothers, in a duo with Dušan Bogdanović and with Romain Bockler (Dulces Exuviae), as well as with his own ensemble, La Lyra.
Since 2011, he has been the artistic director of the early music festival Flores Musicae in Slovenia. In 2013, the Slovenian Institute of Musicology published his critical edition of the lute works of Giacomo Gorzanis, a composer to whom he dedicated La Lyra’s first album, Gorzanis - La barca del mio amore with singer Pino De Vittorio (Arcana - Outhere Music, 2018).
In 2019, he began a series of albums for the Ricercar (Outhere Music) label: *Josquin – Adieu mes amours*, the first CD by the duo Dulces Exuviae, was already very well received by music critics; the following year, his first solo album, Dowland - A Fancy, won the prestigious 2020 Diapason d’Or, Classica’s CHOC, and Gramophone’s Editor’s Choice, followed in 2022 by Gesualdo - Il liuto del Principe (Diapason d’Or, Classica’s CHOC, etc.).
Dulces Exuviae’s album *Toutes les nuits* was released in 2023 on the same label (Gramophone’s Album of the Month, Diapason d’Or, etc.). Their latest album, *Orpheus’ Lute – Improvisation and Wonder in Humanist Italy*, has just been released on the same label, winning the Diapason d’Or and Classica’s CHOC.
After completing his studies in classical and jazz music at the Ljubljana Conservatory, he continued his musical training with Aniello Desiderio in Koblenz, Germany. In 2007, he moved to Geneva to study at the HEM de Genève, where he earned a master’s degree in classical guitar and lute (Dusan Bogdanovic, Jonathan Rubin), a specialized master’s in medieval music, and a master’s in pedagogy. Since 2011, he has served as an assistant on the HES-SO research project “Ricercar una fantasia,” which explores improvisation in 16th-century lute fantasies, and through which he is pursuing his doctoral studies at the Centre d'Études Supérieures de la Renaissance in Tours.
He regularly gives lectures and masterclasses at prestigious institutions such as the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice, the CNSMD in Lyon, and the HEM in Geneva.
