Vienna was in the throes of serious political unrest, forcing many of its artists into exile, when Erich Wolfgang Korngold composed his second string quartet in 1933, which premiered the following year in the Austrian capital. He thus celebrated, before it died out, the effervescence of a musical school that Mozart had been one of the instigators of more than 150 years earlier and that Anton Webern had helped to bring into the modern era. It is this lineage that the musicians of the Hermès Quartet highlight through a program with twilight overtones, in which each work displays a fascinating narrative force and could be the expression of a farewell.

(…) le Quatuor à cordes n° 15, de Mozart, illustre la perfection. Le Quatuor Hermès aussi. L’interprétation de la formation fondée en 2008 ne se contente pas de répondre aux exigences du compositeur. Elle les assimile avec une facilité confondante. L’élégance dans l’action (allegro), la grâce dans la nuance (andante), tout y est, sans oublier les variations mirifiques de la texture. Représentant de la seconde école de Vienne, Anton Webern (1883-1945) n’évoque pas ses prestigieux devanciers de la première école de Vienne (Mozart, Haydn) avec son Langsamer Satz (« mouvement lent ») au lyrisme frémissant, mais plutôt la peinture aux courbes sensuelles de son contemporain Gustav Klimt, membre de la sécession viennoise. Admirable au service de l’équilibre classique, le Quatuor Hermès l’est encore dans le dosage d’un postromantisme sans pathos.
