These two quintets, representing the end of a career for Brahms and the end of a life for Mozart, are animated by a vigorous breath and a bubbling energy. When Brahms's Quintet, both brilliant and moving, recalls some of his best-known themes (including that of the Sextet op. 18, made famous by Louis Malle's film Les Amants), Mozart sets down on paper the four movements of a work that speaks intensely of him, in the diversity of its moods and the complexity of its writing.
