Few people know that there was a women’s orchestra at Auschwitz as well as an orchestra composed of men …

The strictness of the conductors and a musical discipline worthy of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra prevented the male and female musicians from losing their minds and helped them deal with the horror, offering them a ‘haven of peace’ of sorts.

Following the accounts of two musicians (Anita Lasker-Wallfisch and Simon Laks), literally saved by music, pondering the capacity of the human being to be moved to tears by a melody and the next moment to commit the most horrific crimes, Emmanuelle Bertrand and Pascal Amoyel bring this incredible experience back to life, between humour and gravity, leaving us with a message emanating hope.

Il était une fois... is the brand new album by the duo Emmanuelle Bertrand & Pascal Amoyel, with the complicity of their daughter Alma (violin), to be released by Harmonia Mundi at the end of September.

This delightful programme of lullabies and other delicate serenades plunges you into the depths of musical emotion: the kind that touches, consoles, comforts and soothes... Musics of tenderness and love, these pages are a marvellous introduction to learning to listen for the youngest listeners, as well as a treat for informed amateurs.
