They sang gospel music in church as children and were spotted by jazz producers who took them on tour across the United States in precarious conditions, often as the only female presence in an uncomfortable bus. Their voices and swing made them the new divas of the 20th century. Their names are Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Mahalia Jackson, Nina Simone, Bessie Smith, Sarah Vaughan, and Dinah Washington.
