Tribute to Rachmaninov
This programme symbolises the complicity of Rachmaninoff-pianist with Viennese violinist Fritz Kreisler, the only chamber music partner with whom he has recorded. Among the works they have recorded is the iconic Grieg 3rd Sonata, which opens the concert, followed by unique pieces by Rachmaninoff, originally written for violin and piano. Chaikovsky's high-contrast pieces alone show Rachmaninoff's admiration for his elder. A tribute to Rachmaninoff cannot do without works from the piano repertoire, and the Schubert/Liszt Waltz-Caprice and the slow movement of his famous second concerto plunge us into the most dazzling of piano works, both in their brilliance and in the intimacy of the 'prayer' that Kreisler called his arrangement. Kreisler's miniatures inspired Rachmaninoff so much that he arranged them for solo piano and recorded them to leave his mark for eternity.
