Toward a New World Order
François Couperin (1668-1733)
François Couperin, known as “the Great,” is one of the masters of French harpsichord music, whose compositions for the harpsichord are distinguished by their extraordinary evocative power. His “portraits” depict characters and scenes with an almost theatrical finesse. The preludes from L’Art de toucher le clavecin, designed to loosen the fingers and prepare the ear, offer an intimate introduction to his musical language. The program for this concert is expanded through transcriptions for solo harpsichord, created according to the principles championed by Couperin himself: Les Nations, Les Concerts royaux, and other works are thus presented, inviting listeners to experience this music in a new light within the intimate setting of the harpsichord, where dance, theater, and poetry converge.
