La Nébuleuse / Gabriel Rignol
EARLY MUSICAtys
The King's Opera as You've Never Heard It Before - Lully & La Nébuleuse
Cast: 8 singers and 5 instrumentalists.
Premiered in 1676 with a libretto by Quinault, Atys by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632–1687) continues to captivate audiences today with its intensity. A true tragedy of the passions, Atys unfolds an intimate drama set within a mythological world, where love and divine power intertwine until catastrophe strikes.
The ensemble La Nébuleuse, founded by Gabriel Rignol, has chosen to approach Atys from a fresh perspective. Unlike recent large-scale productions, the ensemble has conceived a chamber opera, where the proximity between performers and audience reveals the full emotional power of the score.
The result of extensive research into 17th- and 18th-century musical sources, this new version offers a fresh perspective on Lully’s masterpiece, while remaining faithful to its extraordinary expressiveness.
The project is led by Royaumont Abbey, the primary partner in this production, which has supported the ensemble from the initial research through to the premiere of the show.
Running time: 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours without an intermission. However, an intermission can be included if desired.
