Quatuor Ardeo

STRING QUARTET

Dark Shards

This programme spans the centuries, exploring the eternal interplay between light and shadow.

In the Baroque era, when music was an art of contrast, Purcell dared to employ bold dissonances in his Fantasies. These pieces, written for intimate ensembles, play with harmonic tensions, as the shadow of sombre chords suddenly resolves into radiant clarity.

A mischievous tribute to Haydn, the father of the string quartet, Winkelman’s contemporary quartet adds a touch of humour. Like a playful parrot, the work echoes, distorts and reinvents classical conventions, blending humour and subtlety with contrasts.

Composed towards the end of his life, this quartet is a masterpiece of Romanticism. In it, Schubert explores the duality between major and minor, between a smile and melancholy, as a reflection on the contradictions of existence. (Joelle Martinez)
