Canto Ostinato

Canto Ostinato

Canto Ostinato is a work by the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt. The play was written in 1976 and performed for the first time in 1979. It has become its most popular and most performed play.

The most remarkable aspect of his work is the freedom given to the performers. This piece can be performed with different instruments and a different number of performers. Most of the time, it is played by two or four pianists, but it can adapt very well to instruments such as marimbas and vibraphones.

We can also imagine an interpretation with three marimbas and even add a pianist or an electric keyboard like Fender rhodes.

Other aspects that can illustrate this freedom can be understood by the very construction of the piece. Trio alone or Trio + guests (Percussion, Pianos, Organs, Rhodes…)

Trio SR9 joins singer Kyrie Kristmanson for a concert with the Venus Rising program as part of the Présences Compositrices festival this Friday, April 25th at Abbaye de la Celle (FR) at 8pm!

“Women must write themselves: women must write of women, and bring women to writing, from which they have been as violently estranged as they have been from their bodies.” It was with these words by Hélène Cixous in mind that Trio SR9 and Kyrie Kristmanson built this new “Venus Rising” repertoire. How have women composers set their sacred and/or profane bodies and desires to music over the centuries? Together, they aim to bring to the fore a repertoire made up exclusively of works by women, spanning eight hundred years of musical writing, from Baroque, Classical and Romantic melodies to the music of today. Venus Rising criss-crosses the ages through original arrangements carried by Kyrie Kristmanson's voice and the various percussion instruments of Trio SR9: marimba, vibraphone, glockenspiel and prepared piano.
