Theofáneia
Christmas at the gates of the Orient
At the crossroads of the repertoires of Spain's three cultures and the traditional repertoires of Greece, Kurdistan, Armenia, Maronite... Theofáneia evokes the cultural crossroads that is the Middle East and the musical influence of the cultures present there. Nestled in the heart of the Arab world, it is home to ancient Christian songs as well as Sufi, Jewish and Kurdish repertoires with ancient musical traditions.
Theofáneia takes us to the gates of Aleppo, which in the 10th century became the capital of the kingdom of Emir Saîf al-Dawla, a patron who welcomed the most illustrious musicologist of medieval Islam. In the heart of the Arab East (the Mashriq), Arab-Andalusian sung poems (muwashah) brought over from Spain were integrated into the maqam, creating refined and luminous pieces of rare vitality.
