Sacred Spring

Life, Death, (Re)birth

Sacred Spring is an ode to life and resilience.

Through the themes of enjoyment, mourning and resurrection, the Irini Ensemble, creator of unexpected links between East and West, puts into perspective sacred works by Heinrich Isaac and extracts from Georgian Orthodox liturgy. The genius composer, a great competitor of Josquin Desprez, and the small country resisting the cultural and warlike pressures of Constantinople, the Russians and the Turks, share the same destiny at the end of the 15th century: the brutal collapse of their world and the long road to resilience.

While Florence is at war with Savonarola, the fall of the Medici and the death of Lorenzo the Magnificent, Isaac's friend and protector, Georgia is split in three in the throes of war, and its musical Rome, the monastery of Ghelati, is burnt down.

With "Sacred Spring", the Irini Ensemble in octet, recounts these paths of mourning and return to Life, which echo so strongly in our time, through works for 3, 4 and 6 voices of a refinement and subtlety never equalled.
