Romain Descharmes piano

Pianist Romain Descharmes won First Prize at the 2006 Dublin International Piano Competition, which led him to perform recitals at several prestigious venues: Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, and the Forbidden City Hall in Beijing. His highly acclaimed debut with the Orchestre de Paris established him as a rising star of the French piano scene.

He was subsequently invited to perform in several concert series with the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, the Orchestre de Bordeaux-Aquitaine, the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Nancy…

He has been a guest at numerous festivals, including Piano aux Jacobins, La Roque d’Anthéron, Radio France Montpellier, La Chaise-Dieu, as well as in Mexico (Cervantino) and India (Arties). He also gives concerts at the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, Salle Cortot in Paris, Salle Poirel in Nancy, the Lille Opera, and the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel (Brussels). He has also performed at the Berlin Philharmonie with the French Youth Orchestra as part of the Young Euro Classic festival.

Romain Descharmes is highly regarded as a chamber musician for his attentiveness, sensitivity, and extensive knowledge of the solo, chamber, and orchestral repertoire.

He is a member of the Trio Talweg alongside Sébastien Surel and Eric-Maria Couturier and performs regularly with Sarah Nemtanu, Pierre Fouchenneret, Henri Demarquette, François Salque, Lise Berthaud, and with the Ebène, Diotima, and Danel Quartets.

An eclectic musician, he is a member of the Mosalini-Terruggi Cuarteto. With the Quai N°5 ensemble, he has recorded two albums for Decca-Universal and has performed in major Parisian venues (the Bataclan, La Cigale, L’Européen, and the Café de la Danse).

His discography has been praised by critics and includes solo recordings of works by Brahms, Ravel, Fauré, and Scriabin, as well as the complete Beethoven sonatas for piano and violin with Pierre Fouchenneret (for the Aparté label).
With the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, he recorded the complete works for piano and orchestra by Saint-Saëns under the baton of Marc Soustrot (Naxos), as well as the complete works for piano and orchestra by Fauré and Poulenc.
For Palazetto Bru Zane, he recorded Marie Jaëll’s First Concerto with the Lille National Orchestra.

Deeply committed to teaching, he will begin teaching at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne in the fall of 2026, as well as at the CRR de Paris and the Pôle Supérieur Paris-Boulogne, and is regularly invited to serve on the juries of various international competitions.
